Heinrich and Wilson take money lead … but opponents are right on their heels

The election to replace Jeff Bingaman in the US Senate won’t be held for more than 15 months, but the candidates from both parties are hitting up donors for contributions and the money is rolling in.

Both Democratic candidates have announced that they’ve received more than $400,000 in contributions between April and June of this year while all three Republican candidates combined to rack up more than $900,000 in donations.

The exact figures have not been posted on the Federal Election Commission website yet but candidates had a deadline of July 15 to send in their financial statements.

Here is what the respective campaigns have reported through their websites or through the social media:

Democrats
Hector Balderas
2nd Quarter Contributions $408,000
Cash on hand $371,000
Martin Heinrich
2nd Quarter Contributions $485,000
Cash on Hand $710,000
Republicans
John Sanchez
2nd Quarter Contributions $311,987
Cash on hand $246,530
Greg Sowards
2nd Quarter Contributions $230,000
Cash on hand $334,000
Heather Wilson
2nd Quarter Contributions $425,000
Cash on hand $604,000

The numbers provide good news for just about all the major candidates.

Naturally, Martin Heinrich and Heather Wilson can point to their dollar amounts and tell supporters (and potential supporters) that they have deep enough pockets to best take on the opposition party in the general election in November of 2012.

But Hector Balderas can certainly be heartened by the fact that he raised nearly as much money as a sitting congressman even though Balderas, as state auditor, does not have the kind of name recognition as Heinrich.

On a similar note, Greg Sowards can look at his figures to try to convince potential donors that he can and will make the GOP race a three-way race. Sowards provided $200,000 in self-funding.

The John Sanchez campaign, meanwhile, quickly pointed out that the Lt. Governor raised his $311,987 in just 26 business days since filing for his candidacy. According to FEC numbers, Sanchez took out a $200,500 loan that made up the lionshare of that figure.

Two other candidates — Republican Bill English and Democrat Andres Valdez – have not announced their fundraising dollars through their websites or social media.

In the race for Heinrich’s soon-to-be-vacated seat in the US House of Representatives, the FEC website posted the quarterly figures for one Democratic (state senator Eric Griego) and one Republican (Albuquerque city councilor Dan Lewis) hopeful:

Democratic
Eric Griego
2Q contributions $122,985.50
Cash on hand $172,424.80
Largest contributor Act Blue, Cambridge, MA $75,807.00
Republican
Dan Lewis
2Q contributions $101,481.70
Cash on hand $66,005.04
Largest contributor Dan Lewis $15,250.00

Two recently-announced candidates in Congressional District 1 — Democrat Marty Chavez and Republican Janice Arnold-Jones — will file financial statements next quarter.
